Group Counseling »
Group counseling is a powerful venue for growth and change. Students can receive tremendous understanding, support, and encouragement from others facing similar issues, and they can gain different perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints on those issues. Most students, though somewhat apprehensive at first, report that the group experience was helpful far beyond their expectations. The counseling center offers a variety of group counseling services to help students manage symptoms and gain a better understanding and awareness of self. For more information, or to request an appointment, please call Counseling and Psychiatry at 803-777-5223. Community Support Meetings following the death of a community member »
When the Carolina campus community experiences some form of traumatic event such as the death of a student, staff, or faculty member, a traumatic accident involving one of our community members, or any other form of critical event, it can be beneficial to gather together as a community in a familiar place to share the loss and find support in one another. For this reason, when these instances of loss or tragedy occur, staff from Counseling & Psychiatry can be called upon by community leaders to assist in organizing and leading a Community Support Meeting. A Community Support Meeting is a facilitated conversation that takes place in a location selected by the affected community, and which is structured in order to provide a safe place to talk about what has occurred and how community members are reacting to the event. Community Support Meetings are coordinated by Counseling & Psychiatry in collaboration with the leaders of affected communities on campus. For more information, or to request a Community Support Meeting, please call Counseling & Psychiatry at 803-777-5223.
EmWave BioFeedback »
Biofeedback is simply a method by which you are taught how to relax. Biofeedback teaches deep relaxation skills to help manage our body’s physiological reactions to stress in a visual way. Counseling & Psychiatry’s biofeedback services allow individuals to watch their heartrate on a monitor and then notice changes through engagement with relaxation strategies. Biofeedback is a useful way to manage issues, including feelings of anxiety, stress, or sleep problems.
Blackspace »
is a community group for Black students (undergraduate, graduate, or professional) attending USC that is sponsored and facilitated by the Counseling Center. One of the reasons BlackSpace was created was to ensure a safe space for Black students to talk about how issues of culture, race, and ethnicity influence their experience of being a student at a predominately White campus.
