As a member of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) team, Gavin Weiser (he/his/him pronouns) provides diversity and social justice education opportunities for students, faculty and staff through programs and events such as the annual Diversity Retreat, EMPOWER, Diversity Dialogue Series, R.E.A.L. Talk Series and a number of other programs. He joined the office in fall 2008 as a graduate assistant while pursuing his master’s degree. After graduating in 2010, he left South Carolina for a year before returning to OMSA in 2011 as the assistant director.
At USC, Gavin teaches University 101 and is involved in committees for Carolinian Creed and Diversity Week, the Student Leadership and Diversity Conference and International Education Week. He is also a member of the University Diversity Council.
Gavin’s past work experience includes the Youth Conservation Corps in Waukegan, Ill.; the Princeton-Blairstown Center; Brown University; the National Student Leadership Conference; and Florida State University Reservation, called The Rez.
Gavin earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Humanities with an emphasis on English and African-American Studies from Florida State University and a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina. In his spare time, he enjoys competing in triathlons, running, biking, hiking, paddling, reading and doing research. He also volunteers his time as a big brother with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Columbia.
Gavin says his favorite thing about USC and Student Life is the students with whom he gets to develop long-term meaningful relationships and see them grow through their experiences here at Carolina. He says they are truly a treat and bring a smile to his face every day!
