Freshman Council Marie-Louise Ramsdale Scholarship


The Freshman Council Marie-Louise Ramsdale Scholarship is awarded to a freshman who has benefited the Student Body through a leadership position at USC.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student – Freshman
  2. Minimum 3.0 GPA
  3. Student must have experience with scholarship, leadership and service
  4. Be in good standing with the University
  5. Complete FERPA Compliance Form

Student Body President’s Scholarship

The Student Body President’s Scholarship is awarded to a student who has benefited the Student Body through a leadership position at USC

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  3. Student must have experience with scholarship, leadership and service
  4. Be in good standing with the University
  5. Complete FERPA Compliance Form

Brian Comer Student Government Scholarship

The Brian Comer Student Government Scholarship is awarded to a senior planning to attend graduate/professional school at USC who has made a significant contribution to the Student Body while at USC.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student – Senior
  2. Minimum 3.0 GPA
  3. Student must have experience with scholarship, leadership and service
  4. Be in good standing with the University
  5. Complete FERPA Compliance Form

Outstanding Woman of the Year Award

The 22nd Annual Outstanding Woman of the Year Award recognizes a junior or senior woman at USC that has made and continues to make a positive impact on the USC community and beyond.

Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student – Junior/Senior woman
  2. 60+ credit hours
  3. Attended USC for at least one semester
  4. Cumulative GPA of 3.0
  5. Other areas of consideration include: Academic Achievements and Awards, Campus Involvement, Community Involvement/Service, Athletic Activities, Performing Arts, Campus Media, Work Experience/Internships, and Contributions/Impact to the University and to other women.

Changing the Face of USC Diversity Award

“Changing the Face of USC” Diversity Award is given to a University of South Carolina student who exemplifies the value of diversity and supports communities of multiple identities across campus. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs recognizes an outstanding student, who inspires others to commit to creating a more inclusive campus community. The selected student is dedicated to promoting an awareness of cultural and diversity issues on campus as well as in the Columbia Community. This student will have demonstrated an appreciation for a diverse climate and, moreover, worked to help others understand the importance of multicultural appreciation and social justice.

Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student or Graduate Student
  2. A minimum of 3.0 GPA
  3. One letter of recommendation
  4. Participated in activities across campus that foster appreciation for diversity and social justice.

DeQuincey Newman Outstanding Student Leadership Award

The I. DeQuincey Newman was a civil rights leader and clergymen who, in 1983, became the first African American man to serve in the state senate since Reconstruction. He served as the South Carolina NAACP state field director for nine years. The I. DeQuincey Newman Outstanding Student Award was established in honor of the late I. DeQuincey Newman and given annually to a graduating senior who has exhibited exemplary leadership skills, participates in community building; mentors fellow students; and has a good character.

Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student – Graduating Senior
  2. A minimum of 3.0 GPA
  3. One letter of recommendation
  4. Exhibited exemplary leadership
  5. Participated in university and community organizations/activities
  6. Significantly contributed to the improvement of multiple identities within student life at USC

Ralph E. Johnson Exemplary Leadership Award

Dr. Ralph E. Johnson served as assistant director of Student Life. The Ralph E. Johnson Exemplary Leadership Award is given to recognize the outstanding leadership demonstrated by a student while attending the University of South Carolina. This will also serve to encourage students to actively participate in co-curricular activities and develop leadership skills that will serve the university and greater Columbia area.

Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student
  2. A minimum of 2.75 GPA
  3. One letter of recommendation
  4. Demonstrates outstanding leadership within the university community and subsequently improves the quality of life on campus
  5. Demonstrated involvement in campus activities

Walter Jackson-Thomas Rivers Scholarship Award

The Jackson-River Scholarship Award was named after the former Director and Coordinator of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs-Walter Jackson and Thomas Rivers, for their long term service to all underrepresented student populations and commitment to diversity education. Recipients who have demonstrated high academic achievement (3.0 cumulative GPA), financial need, and a strong commitment to cultural diversity will receive a one-time $250.00 scholarship award. The scholarship is open to all sophomores and juniors at the University of South Carolina. All multicultural students are encouraged to APPLY for this scholarship and other awards offered through the office of Multicultural Student Affairs. Only one scholarship is available and may not be given out annually.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate Student
  2. Must be a full-time, rising sophomore or junior at the University of South Carolina
  3. Must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
  4. One Letter of recommendation
  5. Advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion of an underrepresented group(s) and/or social justice issues.
  6. Demonstrate a strong commitment to the advancement of cultural diversity education at UofSC or in the larger Carolina community (Ex. Implemented or sponsored an event which cultivates diversity and inclusion; Demonstrates a respect or inclusive treatment when interacting with others in res. halls, student organizations, etc.; Participate in programs and events that foster diversity)

Willie L. Harriford Outstanding Service Award

Willie Harriford served as the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the first director of African American Studies.  In 1988, he became the coordinator of Minority Student Affairs.  The Willie L. Harriford Outstanding Service Award recognizes the community service efforts by students attending the University of South Carolina.  This award is given to a student that actively seeks opportunities to address and serve the needs of the African American community as well as the Columbia community in its entirety like Willie L. Harriford did for the Richland County Community.

  1. Undergraduate Student
  2. A minimum of a 2.75 GPA
  3. One letter of recommendation
  4. Demonstrated an active involvement in community service to the USC and Columbia communities

Jessica Horton Outstanding New Student Leader Award

The Jessica Horton Outstanding New Student Leader Award recognizes a first-year student who has contributed significantly to the Carolina community through active involvement in co-curricular activities.

The Carolinian Award recognizes senior, undergraduate students who have been the tireless, behind the scenes workers that every successful activity or organization needs. They are leaders through their actions and contributions to the Carolina community.

Strom Thurmond/Steve Cannon Carolina Cares Scholarship

Strom Thurmond/Steve Cannon Carolina Cares Scholarship recognizes a worthy undergraduate who has made significant contributions to the Carolina and surrounding area through community service.

Award Criteria

  1. Undergraduate Student
  2. Contributes to the Carolinian community and Columbia community through community service initiatives.

Rosemary Broadway Award

Rosemary Broadway Award recognizes a full-time student, undergraduate or graduate, who is actively involved in community service. Rosemary Broadway was an advocate of off-campus students and the award was established in her name to recognize service contributions by off-campus students.

Wilson‐Kibler Bicentennial Award recognizes a student whose demonstrated leadership abilities and experience have contributed to student life.

Rev. O. Woody Hammett Scholarship

Rev. O. Woody Hammett Scholarship was established in honor of Rev. O. Woody Hammett, who served the University of South Carolina as Baptist Campus Minister from 1962-1995. This scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore, junior or senior who has demonstrated proven leadership experience within the university community and has affiliation and involvement with campus Christian organizations and/or a local community of faith.

Award Criteria

  1. Undergraduate Student – Rising Sophomore, Junior or Senior
  2. Leadership experience on campus
  3. Leadership experience within a Christian organization and/or local community of faith

Presidential Volunteer Service Award

Presidential Volunteer Service Award recognizes undergraduate and graduate students who have contributed 100 plus hours of community service during the last 12 months. This national award from The President’s Council of Service and Civic Participation honors Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

Award Criteria

  1. Undergraduate Student or Graduate Student
  2. Contributed 100+ hours of community service in the last 12 months

Advisor of the Year Award

The Advisor of the Year Award recognizes faculty and staff members in the Carolina community who are committed to supporting their student organization and fostering leadership abilities in students. Nominees must be current University of South Carolina employees who are currently serving as an official faculty advisor for a student organization.

Award Criteria

The Outstanding Service Professional Award honors a staff member from a local non-profit agency for their work with University of South Carolina students, faculty and staff. This is an attempt to recognize those individuals who work to serve our community every day.

  2. Serves the Carolinian community every day

TOAST Breakfast

The Outstanding Achievement and Student Triumph Breakfast


The Outstanding Achievement and Student Triumph (TOAST) Recognition Breakfast honors students who deserve recognition in any area of student life. These students can be honored for excellence in the classroom, commitment to a student organization, university department or program, achievement in athletics or arts, etc. This program recognizes all student leaders who may not otherwise be formally recognized for their commitment to student life and the Carolina community.
