Student Media podcast wins national collegiate journalism award

Partnership between The Daily Gamecock, SGTV and WUSC recognized by College Media Association

A collaborative initiative by three organizations in the Office of Student Media earned national honors at the Fall National Media Convention in Dallas, Texas, last week.

“Behind the Spurs: Excited, But Nervous,” a podcast produced through a partnership between The Daily Gamecock, SGTV and WUSC, was awarded “Best Podcast” by the College Media Association at its 2017 Pinnacle Awards, held during the convention.

Fourth-year marketing and management student Luke Baker, fourth-year English student Emily Barber and fourth-year media arts student George Wassel produced the podcast, which explored the orientation process for incoming freshman at the University of South Carolina. Barber currently serves as the editor-in-chief of The Daily Gamecock, while Baker and Wassel are sharing the duties of Student Media’s newly created multimedia director position and are responsible for heading up additional collaborative efforts between all four Student Media organizations.

College Media Association, which describes itself as “the voice of collegiate media and its advisers,” provides education, research and resources to more than 700 student media professionals and the organizations they work with across the nation. CMA’s Pinnacle Awards honor the best college media organizations and individual work in a multitude of categories during an academic year.
