J. Merritt Francis, the 109th Student Body Treasurer for the University of South Carolina, is the ninth person in his entire family to attend USC. Merritt is the third of four children to Todd and Laura Francis. He has two brothers, Adam and Ben, and one sister, Katherine. Merritt lived in the southeast in the beginning of his life, before moving to Tewksbury, New Jersey in 2004. As captain of the football team and member of the wrestling team, and class Treasurer at Voorhees High School, Merritt has always enjoyed working with a team and distinguishing himself as a leader. He is a junior economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences, and is also pursuing a minor in business administration.
Merritt began his college career at Wofford College, and decided to transfer to the University of South Carolina after a year and a half at Wofford. He immediately got involved with student government, and served as the Secretary of Alumni Relations for the 108th executive cabinet. He refers to the transfer as the best decision he has ever made in his life. Merritt is also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon on campus.
Merritt’s main initiatives that he plans to accomplish during his time as Treasurer is to maintain a balanced, economically productive budget; re-establishing the position and utilization of Comptroller to maintain thorough communication and trustworthiness between the Treasurer’s office and student organizations; and to implement a budgeting system to the Finance Committee to maintain consistent allocation of funds for the entirety of the term.
