Frequently Asked Questions
I want to participate in the Palmetto Health Race for Life 5K, but I don’t want to join GOTM. Can I still participate in the 5K race on the GOTM team?
Any USC faculty or staff member can register for the 5K as a GOTM team member. GOTM will meet the morning of the race before it begins.
I want to join GOTM, but I can’t participate in the Palmetto Health Race for Life 5K. Can I still join?
Absolutely. GOTM provides support and resources to run any 5K. GOTM members receive a calendar of local walks and races they can participate in.
Can my spouse, family or friends join GOTM or participate in the race?
While membership in GOTM is open only to USC faculty and staff, members can train with anyone they choose. Anyone can join the “Gamecocks on the Move” team for the Palmetto Health Race for Life 5K. If we have only 40 participants, we can raise $1,000 for breast cancer.
I’ve never done a 5K before. Will I be ready in 10 weeks to run the race?
If you stick to the training plan and don’t overdo it, you should be able to complete the race either by running, walking or a combination of both. However, you should know your limits. You may not be able to run the entire race without stopping, but you may be able to run and walk the race.
How can I train for a 5K in this heat?
When exercising outside, please consider the following:
• Be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after you work out.
• Do not exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
• Try to exercise in the morning before 8 a.m. or in the evening around 7 or 8 p.m.
• Wear sunscreen (at least SPF 30), sunglasses and a hat.
• Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.
All faculty and staff have free membership at the Blatt PE Center, which has treadmills. Members of Strom Wellness & Fitness Center (you can join for a fee), can use the indoor track, which is 1/7 of a mile long.
